The history of Yorkville
Yorkville began life as a quiet residential village, but the population quickly ballooned, and in 1883 it was annexed by the city of Toronto.
The community continued to develop, and by the1960s it became known as a hippie hotspot. It was the focus of Canada’s counterculture movement, and fledging artists would gather at venues such as the famous Riverboat Coffee House, where the likes of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young first cut their teeth.
Over the following years Yorkville became increasingly gentrified, and these days it’s known as an affluent neighbourhood with some of the most expensive real estate in Toronto. Nevertheless, it retains a sense of its history, boasting a laid-back vibe and a village-like atmosphere right in the heart of the city.
